Thanks for any insight or tips!

Hi :

if you do it the way they tell you to do it. It should work very well for you. May be even better than what you get from expense factory made pottery wheel. It a very good project for you. and it well pay for itself when you can sell your pottery made from it. and think about the pride in say you built your pottery shop from the ground up along with the pottery with your own two hands. Good luck and my best wishes to you on this . The plan are at a good price to pay for.

I hope this helps.

How much would it cost to ship a pottery wheel from Salem, Or to Las Vegas NV?

By: admin
Published: November 25th, 2009

How much would it cost to ship from Oregon to Nevada? Who can I go through? How would I go about doing all of this? The pottery wheel is probably less than 150 lbs and maybe 3×3x3 ft. Please help me!

Greyhound bus line ships. They pick up packages and place them on the bus, then bring them to the depot in your town. They will be able to carry your package for a much lower fee that UPS or Fed. While they won’t bring it to your house, all you have to do is pick it up from their terminal located downtown. Greyhound usually takes about 4 days to get from Oregon to Las Vegas. They charge the same price as a ticket. So imagine that you were coming from Oregon. The price would be the same for your package. $99.00 at most!

Do you know a substitute for modeling clay for a pottery wheel?

By: admin
Published: October 15th, 2009

So, I have a little pottery wheel, but sadly, no clay for it. Do you know if I am able to make something like modeling clay that could work on a pottery wheel and dry with out getting moldy or gross? Or maybe do you know something that could be used as modeling clay? Please, if you’re able to, say as much as you know because I am a little sick and have nothing to do and I would LOVE to try out my new pottery wheel. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =P

I think you need to find somebody local with a kiln.

Check with local ceramic supply dealers.
Also check pottery groups

People I know are very particular about what is fired

You will need to discuss what will be fired and what glazes you will use.

I take a ceramics class that clay is included in the price of the class. I also have bought ceramic clay in 50 pound boxes.

EDIT: I read some of your previous questions. You are are around Junior High School age. I feel that there may be some special things available through school. Please talk to an art teacher or any teacher. In the town I live I know a few teachers that do ceramics in the school system

Choosing a Durable Turntable

By: admin
Published: October 11th, 2009

Turntables are popular nowadays because of the rave and hiphop culture. Usually, disc jockeys use turntables to mix with the songs to have a signature sound.

Turntables are rotating platforms that refer to either music or technology devices. In the music scene, a turntable is a type of gramophone or phonograph driven by a motor at a constant speed. They are also referred to as a musical instrument of the modern era used in “turntablism.” Turntablism is the art of playing the turntables.

There are also other references in the music scene such as the song from a popular girl group from the nineties called TLC and the so-called “turntable hit,” a hit vinyl single commonly triumphant in the airplay tables than in sales.

In terms of technology, the word turntable is the rail, motor vehicle, display, Lazy Susan, and a pottery wheel. A turntable rail is a device for railroad facilities in order to turn rolling stocks or automotives onto or around the radial arranged tracks. This type is also called a “rotary transfer table.” The motor is a manual or motorized device installed in a garage floor or a driveway. This device rotates motor vehicles to facilitate a safer or an easier outlet of the vehicle.

Those used for display are usually motorized tables solely for displaying various kinds of items. A pottery wheel or a potter’s wheel is also called a turntable for it uses a rotating table to shape the spinning clay. Lazy Susans are also a form of turntable placed at the top of tables so that items particularly food is easily reached even if the person is at a sitting position.

Selecting a Turntable (Musical Instrument)

A lot of people believe that traditional vinyl records give a richer and warmer sound for music. Numerous disc jockeys or DJs are experts in playing turntables for it allows them easy control and operation so as to what music is played. Although our technology is somehow out of date, you can still see turntables in various places.

You must first take note on the kinds and number of outputs you want or need to have in your turntable. There are some recently manufactured that come with USB connectors. This makes transferring of music from LP to the computer as easy as snapping your fingers. Make sure that the product you are going to buy properly connects with your mixing board, computer, and speakers.

Turntables not vibrating too much are more preferable. Look for those that appear to be durable. If possible, ask for warranties. Those made of plastic are not advisable for they are not durable. It also tends to vibrate more. Vibrations may disrupt the sound and adversely affect the audio quality.

Bend over to the belt-drive type of turntables meaning the motor inside that turns a belt and makes records spin. Direct-drives spin records automatically though they also disrupt the music because of vibrations. On the other hand, belt-drive turntables reduce the vibrations thus giving you a clearer sound. If you are into DJ scratching, select the direct-drive type to allow better control.

Make sure that your turntable has a very good seclusion from the stylus. Check this by playing a vinyl record and slightly tapping the turntable’s base. Thumps or clicks indicate that it is made of less solid construction and therefore less durable also.

Sometimes it is also advisable to look for a certain brand trusted to produce quality products. You could gather reviews from different media and personal testimonials from current users to get an idea.

SO i want to purchase a pottery wheel?

By: admin
Published: September 17th, 2009

I was wondering if anybody knew anything about pottery wheels i want to buy one but i don’t know which kind is the best deal and what clay i should get if i don’t have a kiln. I live in san marcos, tx so if there is any place in austin i should go to buy please do tell or i’m willing to order online. THANK YOU

There is no point in getting a pottery wheel if you don’t have a kiln to fire the clay unless you plan on making stuff and air drying it and keeping it inside where it will be dusty and fragile, as unfired clay is very weak.
A pottery wheel depends on water and wet clay for movement under the hands so other forms of clay will not work.
It sounds as though you have an interest but have not taken a class or do not have someone to ask questions, so I would strongly suggest you find someone. Kilns are available for firing at places that give classes.
Wheels are available used because people buy stuff with less experience that you have and discover their limits.
Armadillo Clay http://www.armadilloclay.com/ is a major resource for potters in mid Texas and they can give you advice and connect you will people who offer classes and services.

Are all pottery wheels foot pumped?

By: admin
Published: August 26th, 2009

I have Spina Bifida and unable to use my feet real good. I love pottery making and would love to get started in that as a career. I know by using a pottery wheel it would be alot easier than just doing everything by hand. Please if any one knows if they’re are pottery wheels that aren’t foot controlled I would much appreciate any and all information given. No links are necessary just your own knowledge is fine. Thanks in advance!

You can rig a foot switch with a lever, if you can use your knee – my sewing machine has a foot pedal mounted sideways behind a folding knee lever inside the case.
If you can’t use your knee, someone who has a moderate knowledge of electrical work could measure the resistance on the foot controller as well as the amps running through it and make a rheostat mounted with a lever handle (like a one handle faucet) that you could bump to a new position with the back of your hand or some other body part. You might contact some of the wheel makers and see if they already have something as part of reasonable accommodation – like they want to sell wheels to schools having partially immobile kids.
