What are good areas to study in terms of pottery?

i need ideas for masters/doctorate in the study of prehistoric/medieval pottery in ireland. I want to specialise in pottery but need to think of an interesting area to base my dissertation on. I need to get 2-3 years work out of the topic though.
Scientific ideas are welcome.
Im not asking for people to think of a topic for me, just throw some ideas at me so i can get thinking about different areas of research.
Thanks!

This sounds like a great project – some ideas I had:
Glazes – colours, minerals/dyes, and decorative motifs
Methods of pot turning – construction of wheels etc.
