John, you will find …
John, you will find that different clay bodies will take on water at different rates. Also try using clay that is a little stiffer, that may help a lot. And finally, work as rapidly as you can so the water doesn’t sit on the pot for too long. You will find your own way, just lots of practice.

Wow, you make this …
Wow, you make this look so freakin’ easy. I am determined to do this someday. How many pounds of clay are you using and does it have grog or is it porcelain?

Could be too thin …
Could be too thin or the clay being too soft.

whenever I throw …
whenever I throw wide forms with narrow tops
the should always seems to collapse on me
is this because my walls are too thin
or is it bc I shaping it too aggressively?

So, Dan, I tried …
So, Dan, I tried using more water on a piece that, for me, is a taller piece and it helped. I find that I pull the height faster now than when I was learning and so I was able to get rid of the water before it started to soften the clay too much. The piece was still pretty soft around the top by the time I got it up there, but the base was pretty good. Thanks for your advice.

Hi,I’ve never used …
Hi,I’ve never used a rib in my life, just my fingers to open it up.
I use a lot of water because if I don’t my fingers tend to grip on the clay and send it out of shape.
Personally I would use as much water as you can as it’s really just a lubricant and eases the lifting and widening….for me anyway.
But It’s not an exact science so whatever you find best for you then stick to it.
Cheers,Dan

When you were …
When you were expanding the form, were you using a rib on the inside, or your fingers/hand?
I notice you use what appears to be a lot of water; do you find that helps. I am trying to minimize my use of water to keep the clay plastic and workable. Any comment?

Thank you very nice shape.

It’s easier to get …
It’s easier to get some height and then just open the pot out rather than trying to widen it out from the start.
Otherwise you’ll tend to get the top too wide and find it hard to collar it back in.

this is really …
this is really helpful. i use to start to shape the clay right from the start. now i know to get the height before shape.

oh ok, sometimes …
oh ok, sometimes when i throw with an old bat, it moves around on the pegs and makes a weird noise similar to that. nice work, i like to throw the same shapes so, right on.

Hi,This was about 5 …
Hi,This was about 5 lbs of clay.
The banging noise is the wheel’s motor noise when I’m putting strain on it when I’m centering.

Watching you throw …
Watching you throw is helpful, I’m just a young kid but I’m very skilled at throwing, Im just trying to diversify my technique you know? anyway,i wonder how many kilos of clay that was? 2? also, that banging/clicking sound i hear, is that your bat just being loose? or something entirely different?
