Thanks for any insight or tips!

Hi :

if you do it the way they tell you to do it. It should work very well for you. May be even better than what you get from expense factory made pottery wheel. It a very good project for you. and it well pay for itself when you can sell your pottery made from it. and think about the pride in say you built your pottery shop from the ground up along with the pottery with your own two hands. Good luck and my best wishes to you on this . The plan are at a good price to pay for.

I hope this helps.

Do you know a substitute for modeling clay for a pottery wheel?

Published: October 15th, 2009

So, I have a little pottery wheel, but sadly, no clay for it. Do you know if I am able to make something like modeling clay that could work on a pottery wheel and dry with out getting moldy or gross? Or maybe do you know something that could be used as modeling clay? Please, if you’re able to, say as much as you know because I am a little sick and have nothing to do and I would LOVE to try out my new pottery wheel. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =P

I think you need to find somebody local with a kiln.

Check with local ceramic supply dealers.
Also check pottery groups

People I know are very particular about what is fired

You will need to discuss what will be fired and what glazes you will use.

I take a ceramics class that clay is included in the price of the class. I also have bought ceramic clay in 50 pound boxes.

EDIT: I read some of your previous questions. You are are around Junior High School age. I feel that there may be some special things available through school. Please talk to an art teacher or any teacher. In the town I live I know a few teachers that do ceramics in the school system

SO i want to purchase a pottery wheel?

By: admin
Published: September 17th, 2009

I was wondering if anybody knew anything about pottery wheels i want to buy one but i don’t know which kind is the best deal and what clay i should get if i don’t have a kiln. I live in san marcos, tx so if there is any place in austin i should go to buy please do tell or i’m willing to order online. THANK YOU

There is no point in getting a pottery wheel if you don’t have a kiln to fire the clay unless you plan on making stuff and air drying it and keeping it inside where it will be dusty and fragile, as unfired clay is very weak.
A pottery wheel depends on water and wet clay for movement under the hands so other forms of clay will not work.
It sounds as though you have an interest but have not taken a class or do not have someone to ask questions, so I would strongly suggest you find someone. Kilns are available for firing at places that give classes.
Wheels are available used because people buy stuff with less experience that you have and discover their limits.
Armadillo Clay http://www.armadilloclay.com/ is a major resource for potters in mid Texas and they can give you advice and connect you will people who offer classes and services.

Are all pottery wheels foot pumped?

By: admin
Published: August 26th, 2009

I have Spina Bifida and unable to use my feet real good. I love pottery making and would love to get started in that as a career. I know by using a pottery wheel it would be alot easier than just doing everything by hand. Please if any one knows if they’re are pottery wheels that aren’t foot controlled I would much appreciate any and all information given. No links are necessary just your own knowledge is fine. Thanks in advance!

You can rig a foot switch with a lever, if you can use your knee – my sewing machine has a foot pedal mounted sideways behind a folding knee lever inside the case.
If you can’t use your knee, someone who has a moderate knowledge of electrical work could measure the resistance on the foot controller as well as the amps running through it and make a rheostat mounted with a lever handle (like a one handle faucet) that you could bump to a new position with the back of your hand or some other body part. You might contact some of the wheel makers and see if they already have something as part of reasonable accommodation – like they want to sell wheels to schools having partially immobile kids.

Published: August 11th, 2009

I’m looking into buying a cheap pottery wheel and kiln? I don’t really want to pay more that £40 quid for the wheel, and if i could get an electric one for that much that’d be brilliant! But i have no idea how much a basic potter’s kiln goes for but any information and advice for beginners potter would be awesome =).

xx

I don’t have experience with choosing a pottery.
However, there are pottery wheels from my source link.
There are customer’ reviews, too.
I hope that you can get idea there.
Good luck !

How to throw miniature pottery on the wheel?

By: admin
Published: July 31st, 2009

Does anybody know how to throw miniature pottery on the wheel? I am still fairly new at throwing and I have a passion for miniature things. I would like to learn how to throw mini pots. Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks.

The most obvious point is to build a bridge across the large wheel and add a small diameter plaster bat to make a raised wheel that you can get at with small tools and your fingers. Resting way out on the rim of a large wheel is going to destroy accuracy. This search, besides showing your question, should lead you to some clues as to how others do it. http://www.google.com/search?q=throwing+miniature+pots&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
