Do you know of any good, online websites to find job opportunities under the field of ceramics/pottery jobs?

By: admin
Published: December 25th, 2009

I will be graduating soon from art school with a BFA in Ceramics, and would like to expand my horizon by possibly working for another artist, at a production pottery shop, a brick factory, or something else. How do I find these jobs online or else where?

I would suspect that most of the places like those named would be hiring low pay labor instead of BFA’s in Ceramics. You should have a good resource in just asking your teachers about what they hear from former students and places in your area. Also, you need to make contact with ceramics/pottery suppliers in your area that also work with commercial places and talk to the owner or other person who interacts with places that might hire someone like you. If you haven’t done so in the last 3-4 years, it might too late to be useful, but Google the address of your school and Search nearby for Ceramics and Pottery

Antique Lamps in Greek Revival Style

By: admin
Published: December 18th, 2009

The mythology and superb design of ancient Greece has fascinated us for thousands of years and for centuries there have been constant revivals of the styles developed in the classical Greek world of 500 BC.

In the early 18th century classical, or, neoclassical revival, the style pervaded every type of decorative art and by the early 1760s men like Robert Adam’s furniture designs where the height of fashionable style.

With their refined eye for style and design this simple, yet elegant line quickly crossed the channel into France, Adam’s neoclassical classical style became known as the “style Etruscan” and much favored by the court of Louis XV

Enormous interest was generated by this smart neoclassical classical style and was further advanced by the beginnings of archeology and the excavation of Greek vases which became models for new types of ceramics: Wedgwood’s jasperware (for which John Flaxman did many designs) in England and Sèvres porcelain in France.

The Greek classical revival was restored to favor through the 1820’s especially in architecture and the decorative arts. This revival strengthened again in the 1860 -1870 period with the classical Greek decoration now seen on a wide variety of porcelain and pottery.

Gadgets – Mechanical Or Maniacal Devices?

By: admin
Published: December 14th, 2009

Gadgets are guy things. Maybe it’s in their genes – or maybe it’s just in their blue jeans.

My guy loves digital cameras. I don’t because I don’t like having my picture taken. Maybe it’s because I’m part American Indian and I feel like my soul is being taken. Of course, you’d think something that could take my soul could take my wrinkles too.

You’d think I could get with the twenty-first century, but not being mechanically inclined continually gets in my way. The more buttons and switches something has, the more chance there is for me to experience the frenzied frustration of failure – to swear.

I don’t want a phone to take pictures, text message, remind me to buy a birthday card or tell me when I’m late. I just want a phone to talk to someone who’s not in voice range. What I want is two paper cups and a very long string.

I had an electric can opener, but I gave it to the thrift store. It was awkward to operate, hard to clean and didn’t make canned food taste better. Canned food is for camping or power failures. Maybe electric can openers should come with long extensions cords.

Small, electrical devices are meant to make our lives easier – but do they? I was given an electric jewelry cleaner; but after it cleaned my jewelry, it had to be cleaned. John was given an electric device that keeps the springs wound in his self-winding watch by making the watch go around when he’s not wearing it. Obviously, the person who gave it to John doesn’t think he gets around enough.

Espresso makers, popcorn poppers, knife sharpeners and more – what would bridal registries do without electric-must-haves? Bed Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware – I think couples over register; and as my grandmother would have said, “Be careful what gadget you ask for, you might get it”. Nevertheless, my grandmother would have appreciated the bridal registry I recently found on line. It’s called “notanothertoaster”.

Frankly, progress doesn’t always look progressive. There’s a company that makes an old-fashioned, telephone handset – the black, heavy thing people used to hold against their ear. You’re meant to plug your cell phone into it for a new look. There’s also a company that makes a warm, hand-shaped pillow to sooth a restless baby. Is it just me or are these “oh gad-gets”?

How do I go about studying pottery?

By: admin
Published: December 11th, 2009

I want to start pottery hobby but want to be good at it.

Are there any schools I can go to learn the science and art of pottery?
I’m 52 years old medical professional right now.

Most art schools/art programs offer ceramics classes, which are "pottery". You can take these classes via continuing education, or you can even do a degree, if you’d like. You can also take ceramics/pottery classes if there are any local "do it yourself" pottery shops near you.

Honduras: The Lenca Trail

By: admin
Published: December 9th, 2009

Those seeking a cultural experience off the beaten track should consider The Lenca Trail, a 76-mile route spanning from Santa Rosa de Copán to La Esperanza in the Western Highlands. In a series of charming towns, visitors will encounter the Lenca people – one of the largest indigenous groups in Honduras. A great gateway to the route is the town of Gracias, home to colonial churches, a Lenca museum, historical fort, and a Farmer’s Market where the Lenca people sell their vegetables and pottery. Other offshoots of the route include San Manuel de Colohete and La Campa – where visitors can witness the Lenca people making their pottery using the same methods as their ancestors. http://www.colosuca.com (This video was filmed in August 2009, in conjunction with the Honduras Institute of Tourism.)
